#DesignerSpotlight – Amrita Singh  Jewelry

  • What inspired you to start Amrita Singh Jewelry? I had always wanted to be in the fashion business from the early age of 13. It was my calling! It was my love for beads, baubles and semi precious stones that got me started with my first collection in 2003.
  • How does your Indian heritage influence your designs? I always go back to my roots for inspiration. India has a rich heritage of color and workmanship that can be seen throughout my collection. I love the period of Mughal dynasty as well as the Victorian influence on Indian jewelry.
  • How have your collections evolved from when you first started? In 2003 the first collection was our MAHARAJA fine jewelry which was very traditional Mughal inspired pieces. The collection was one of a kind pieces from the price range of $5000, to $150,000 a piece. Fast forward to 2015, we have expanded our line to fashion/trend jewelry which is affordable luxury that has pieces from $25 to $300. In addition to jewelry we also have diversified into accessories such as sandals, bags, scarves, home accents as well as ready to wear capsule collections. We sell on our website www.amritasingh.com as well as 200 stores/boutiques worldwide.
  • What was the tipping point for you to break into retailers such as Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Macy’s? We had an organic growth since our inception and it was word of mouth as well as the press and celebrities that drove our product into retailers around the world.
  • What advice do you have for inspiring designers? Always look for a “Reason to exist”, find a niche and always listen to your customers!
  • What’s next for Amrita?! I would love to explore the cottage industry in Indian Handloom fabrics. There is so much talent out there that needs to be seen by the western world. I am working on my next venture in RTW for 2016. I currently do not have one of Amrita’s products. Below are designs I was hoping to feature as a part of our collaboration.
