#PowerWomen – Meet Rupa Parekh Founder of Umani

Mom playing with baby Jai Jai Hooray Indian God's Flash Cards for Kids

Jai Jai Hooray Flashcards c/0 Umani  Playmat c/o  – Baby Jalebi

I can’t believe Baby Aadhav is three weeks old! Time really does go by fast with a little one. Now that I am a mother, I’m thinking about how we want to instill values and our culture to Aadhav. Growing up, there weren’t many Indian American children in my school. My mom tried to teach us about our Indian culture and religion by taking us to the Hindu Temple every week. Since we didn’t understand Sanskrit, it was hard to follow what the Pundit (Priest) was saying. We learned how to do arti, recite the gayatri mantra, and celebrate festivals, yet it wasn’t until I was in college that I really understood the meaning behind so many of the traditions we followed. As a mom, I do my best to share with Aadhav our culture and beliefs. I want him to not only learn about our religion, but also understand the meaning and history of the Gods, Goddesses, holidays, and festivals we celebrate. When I first heard about Umani and the company’s first product, Jai Jai Hooray flashcards, I knew I wanted to share them with Aadhav. Umani is dedicated to making cultural learning irresistible through beautifully simple tools, toys and experiences.  The company launched it’s first product line, Jai Jai Hooray, to create a tool that made it easy for anyone to be a teacher or student. I chatted with Rupa, founder of Umani to learn more about what inspired her to start Umani!

#PowerWomen – Meet Sumaira Nabeel Founder of Indus Threads

Social and Style x Indus Threads x Ayesha Hashwani 12

//Outfit – Indus Threads //

From Coke Studio to serials such as Humsafar and Zindagi Gulzar Hai, I love Pakistani influenced arts and culture. For me, Pakistani fashion is a work of art. From the detailed embroidery to the silhouettes, I love the attention to detail. While I strive to support next generation designers, I also have to keep my budget in mind when deciding on pieces to invest in. So many of you messaged me about how my previous post on Indus Threads resonated with you. I’m sure we can all relate to spending quite a bit on our South Asian outfits only to wear them once or twice. And then they likely go out of style. Indus Threads provides access to a wide range of Indian and Pakistani high-end designers from established design houses to up and coming artists. I learned about designer Ayesha Hashwani on Indus Threads’ website and couldn’t wait to try this royal blue kaftan suit. The outfit is so unique and it was so fun to try something out of my comfort zone. I added a gold Clutch from Arya Trinkets and Threads and a statement bangle from H&M to complete the look. I sat down Sumaira, the founder of Indus Threads to learn more about how she started the company and her vision for the future.

For instance,  the up cycled sari bangles  are wrapped with a gold accent to give a glint of glamour. Named for the Sanskrit word for “girl” the Kumari Bangles will buy a girl rescued from the redlight districts of India, one week of school.  All sales benefit Apne Aap, a charity that helps educate girls rescued from the red light districts of India. Sonia Kapadia

After a long day, I love to unwind and watch the Food Network. From Semi-Homemade to Giada’s at Home – the network’s shows have sparked my passion for entertaining and cooking. One of my favorite new shows is Food Fortunes (think Shark Tank for food!).
