Discover Singapore! I am excited to launch a new series on the blog today. So many of you have asked me to share more about living in Singapore from the streets to the food after seeing my stories on Instagram and Snap (SocialandStyle). Through this series, I’ll be sharing my favorite hidden gems in Singapore (SG). For our first few months in SG, we will be staying in a service apartment, which is centrally located by the Somerset MRT (subway/metro) off Orchard Road. For those who have not visited, Orchard Road is the main shopping area where you can find everything from high-end luxury goods to hawker centers (local street food). We are lucky to be living so close to everything. Once we move to our own apartment, we’ll likely be further away from the city so I am enjoying living in Orchard to the max! During my first week in SG, I ventured off Orchard Road and found a beautiful side street called Emerald Hill. Little did I know that this street would become one of our favorite places to dine and hang out! Here are a few of our favorite places on Emerald Hill Road!

During Singapore’s colonial days, Emerald Hill was known for its nutmeg plantations and the Orchard area was full of fruit orchards. The Emerald Hill that we know today was built in 1901 and Peranakan-style shop houses were the early residents. When on Emerald Hill, look out for the art deco and Chinese Baroque style architecture with grand gates, colorful window shutters, and ornate doors.

Here are my favorite places on Emerald Hill Road in Singapore!

  • Dining: Que Pasa – This Spanish Tapas bar is great for a chill evening on the patio when you want great food and conversation. While the small plates can be a bit pricey, each one we tried was full of flavor. The wine selection is amazing too.
  • Specials: No. 5 Emerald Hill Cocktail Bar is one of our favorite hangouts for many reasons. First (and foremost), they have great deals on drinks. SG heavily taxes alcohol so drink specials are a great way to dine affordably. The bar also serves unshelled peanuts that you toss on the floor! The nutshells add to the casual atmosphere which is much welcomed in the Orchard area. P.S. The chicken wings are great too!
  • Housing: While we would love to live here, a two-level house costs about $7 million to buy or you can rent one for $12,000 a month!
