Happy Diwali! I hope you had a wonderful New Year. My first Diwali as a newlywed was even more special since I was back home in Maryland with my husband and family. My sister, Jiju (brother-in-law), and nephew were in DC for the week. Both my Jiju and husband had conferences in DC so it was the perfect time for the family to get together. We kicked off the week of celebrations with a staycation at The Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City. I can’t wait to share my experience with you next week. Friday, we celebrated my nephew’s 5th birthday. Followed by my sister’s baby shower on Saturday. I’ll be sharing all the details from the Garden Themed Baby shower soon! Sunday, we celebrated Diwali as a family with a puja and dinner at home. Lots of Indian sweets, diyas (candles), and fireworks made for a memorable Diwali. For the celebrations, I teamed up with Tracy Smith founder of Miss Desi Couture to design a custom outfit. By now, you all know how much I love the cape trend, especially with Indian wear. Meeting through Instagram, Tracy and I instantly connected with our love for Desi fashion. Together, we designed a beautiful cape lengha for me to wear on Diwali. After sharing the outfit on Snap and Instagram Stories, many of you asked me to share details on how we designed the outfit!

Growing up, we visited India during our summer vacations. Rather than spend time in crowded, over priced shops, we would design our own outfits working directly with designers and tailors. Today, custom designs are still my favorite. Here’s how Tracy and I created the Diwali cape lengha.

  • Inspiration – First, I sent Tracy a few of my favorite outfits from Instagram. Originally, I wanted to wear a ombre colored sari with a mirrored sequenced blouse and cape overlay.
  • Design – Tracy sent a few sketches based on the inspiration. Soon, we both realized there would be too much going on with the different colors, styles, and material. Thankfully, we were able to create a new design in just a few days. We kept the cape idea and then designed the lengha. With Tracy’s keen design skills, she let the focus be on the blouse and cape, keeping the skirt simple. Tracy provided several sketches of the outfits as the design progressed to ensure it was what we both envisioned.
  • Final Look – The last decision was the color. We decided on a bright festive fuchsia hue, complimented with gold accents. I sent Tracy my measurements and the outfit arrived on time and fit perfect!
