One of my favorite things is finding the perfect gift for my family and friends (and myself!). With so many gift options online, I was excited to find Jasmine + Marigold – a South Asian inspired clothing line for women, children and babies! Jasmine+Marigold carries designs that reflect South Asian culture and are fun and personal. With tanks, tees, and onesies for both Indian and Pakistani cultures, J+M has designs for South Asian (Desi) holidays, families, and life events such as weddings. I can’t wait to wear the Dulhan tank on my honeymoon! After connecting with Sidra, founder of Jasmine+Marigold, I was excited to try one of the designs. I selected a lounge tank, which was so comfortable to wear. The “But First Chai…” was perfect for me since my day starts with morning chai. Since the tank arrived, I’ve worn it every morning for the last week while having my chai and following my morning routine. For the last ten years, my morning is always the same. I wake up, say my prayers, have my morning chai, and then finish with yoga and a run on a good day. The tank is now my go-to lounge wear! I also love all the super cute baby clothes too. • Tell us more about what inspired you to start Jasmine + Marigold?! The seed was planted for Jasmine + Marigold when I was looking for an “I Love Nana and Nani” bodysuit a few days after I found out I was pregnant – I wanted to give my parents a bodysuit as my pregnancy reveal and there was nothing like this on the market. I was forced to create a pretty plain looking one off some website I can’t even remember. My daughter doesn’t even wear this onesie because the material is horrible! Then, as I was getting ready to return to work, I realized that the Muslim holiday Eid was approaching and I really wanted my baby to have a “My First Eid” bodysuit, and again nothing was on the market! I was annoyed by this and figured I’d do something to fix this. I did a ton of research on products because I knew other mamas would want something soft and worth their money for their little one. I started out doing just Eid onesies and have expanded to all kinds of relationship onesies for the Desi baby and Desi women tops, too.
  • How do you come up with the designs for Jasmine + Marigold?! I am a much better artist when it comes to pencil and paper than Illustrator (this is something my own husband even just discovered recently!) so I draw things out and then take them to Illustrator. I come up with ideas as soon as I’m headed to bed — like *lightbulb!* Sweeter than Jalebi, or when I’m driving! I have a long list in my phone of future designs and ideas for J+M that haven’t yet come to fruition.
  • What are your best selling products?! During the Eid holiday period, the My First Eid onesie was a huge hit. I literally couldn’t keep any on hand. They make such good commemorative photos, but they’re also pretty practical. My daughter wore a silk shalwar kameez on Eid to prayer but we changed her into her sparkly onesie for the rest of the day. She was really comfy and looked so cute!
  • What’s next for Jasmine + Marigold?! J+M aims to celebrate all our cultural fun in a festive way. I am overly festive when it comes to every holiday — and I know I can’t be the only one! I was a bride once and I couldn’t find a gorgeous Dulhan shirt for day-of-photos, so J+M has that now. I want to expand the women’s line and add more mama shirts and cute tees for the desi girl. I also want to celebrate more cultural holidays. Pakistan Day and India Day are coming up and my daughter is of mixed heritage so I want her to be proud to be Pakistani – so those are now in the shop. My Indian friends will celebrate Diwali soon so I’ve designed cute tees for their babies that’ll be added to the shop really soon. But ultimately, I want J+M to be a brand where we – Desis, Muslims, and other diverse groups – can find avenues to celebrate our holidays and build traditions with our children. I jokingly tell my friends that J+M aims to make Christmas jealous ;) I want my daughter — and other children — to look forward to holidays that are important in our culture with just as much enthusiasm as they look forward to the American traditions we have adopted. We should be proud of our culture and since our children are mostly 1st or 2nd gen Americans, let’s pass on what we can.
