Super Supplements for a healthier you!

As I sat in the stylist’s chair about to try yet another deep conditioning hair treatment, my stylist asked me, “What kind of supplements are you taking?”  Supplements I wondered? What does that have to do with my hair? For the next two hours my stylist and I chatted about vitamins, supplements, and natural ways to make you look and feel great. I soon started talking to my own friends and family about vitamins and found they swore by their supplements too! I discovered that supplements can help support everything from healthy hair, skin, and nails to our digestive, respiratory, and immune system.

When deciding what supplements are best for you, it’s important to consult your doctor as each person reacts differently. As always, the safest and most effective source of these vitamins is diet, not supplements. Take time to ensure you are naturally getting these vitamins. If you are interested in a supplement, try a sample for about a week and see how you feel. After trying several vitamins and brands, I finally have five that I stick with and take each day. These have really helped improve my skin, hair, and body.

Five Super Supplements

Calcium chews with vitamin D

  • What: Calcium is important for strong and healthy bones. Our nerves, muscles, and heart also need calcium to function properly.
  • Why: Calcium supplements help give our bodies this important vitamin and the added vitamin D helps our bodies better absorb calcium.
  • How: These chews give you that little sweet something you crave after dinner and are good for your body!

Wheatgrass

  • What: One of my favorite supplements, wheatgrass helps with digestion and gives our bodies a boost of natural energy! Wheatgrass contains over 30 beneficial enzymes, which aid in digestion and help utilize body fat for increased energy.
  • Why: A powerful antioxidant, wheatgrass prevents damage caused by free radicals cells in our body. Wheatgrass may also aid in reducing high blood pressure and lowering cholesterol.
  • How: Fresh wheatgrass is the best, but can be pricey. I use a scoop of the powered version each morning in my probiotic smoothie.

Chlorophyll

  • What: Remember our days in science class – what gives plants their green color? Chlorophyl! Who knew the substance that helps plants absorb sunlight and turn it into energy (photosynthesis) is also good for our bodies!
  • Why: Containing vitamins C, A, and E, liquid chlorophyll is packed with strong antioxidant properties. This supplement aids in digestion and cleansing the digestive track. Chlorophyll supports our bodies’ natural cleansing process by helping to eliminate toxins from our body.
  • How: Take a spoonful each morning (a lot of people say this product does wonders for morning breath too!)

Probiotic

  • What: Bacteria that helps maintain the natural balance of organisms in our intestine, probiotics support a healthy digestive system.
  • Why:  Probiotic enhanced foods also help our bodies’ maintain a healthy immune system by aiding in the production of antibodies. 
  • How: Look for yogurts, smoothies, and cheeses with the label  “live and active cultures” since probiotics are living “good” bacteria. 

Multi Vitamin

  • What: Multivitamins are a good way to help supplement your diet. It’s important to know what’s in the multivitamin you are taking and ensure you are not getting too much of any one vitamin.
  • Why: Multivitamins made specifically for women are rich in iron, vitamin A, calcium, beta-carotene, and biotin. Biotin is known to help combat hair loss, brittle nails, skin irritation. 
  • How: Discuss with your doctor which multivitamin is best for you!
